Scientology and Pyramid Schemes?

Snipped from slate.com.

I have to admit, I know very little about Scientology. My exposure to it was the brief rantings of Tom Cruise concerning psychotropic drugs. I guess the reason I don’t know more is because I basically don’t like religion in any form. So, I never really attempted to learn anything about it. When I caught an article on the slate.com website concerning Scientology, I clicked to find out more. Something which I had passively observed was that very rich people like Tom Cruise and John Travolta are outspoken members and that the Church of Scientology reeks of wealth. Where does the wealth come from? You may be surprised.

Top Ten Most Lame Reasons to Have Sex

sex.jpg

In a recent study reported by the New York Times by psychologists at the University of Texas, more than 2,000 people were asked why they had sex. In this study, they ended up with 237 reasons which were further categorized as being the most important motive for having sex. The top three were pretty predictable and included “I wanted to express my love for the person”, “I was sexually aroused” and “It’s fun.” These were pretty typical of what you would expect to find. But then there were the ones who topped out as the lamest and probably not ones you would expect that really got my attention. So without further ado, Blog4Brains proudly presents…The Top Ten Most Lame Reasons to Have Sex…

Men vs Women in the ‘Fat Wars’

obesity.jpg

With the stakes growing for both men and women in our culture in regards to the devastating impact of obesity on health, there are more and more studies concerning our obesity epidemic. In American adults obesity has doubled since 1980, and obesity in children has tripled. Correlated with these high incidences of obesity are heart disease, stroke, arthritis and some cancers. So, I guess it’s time for America to declare another war. This time America should do something really positive like recognize this dire threat in our homeland and declare a ‘War on Fat’. If we do, then how would the sexes fight this war? Would men and women fight alongside each other or end up on opposite ends of the battlefield? Just how would men and women fight the ultimate “Battle of the Bulge”?

Do Sex and Monogamy Go Together?

Snipped from AlterNet.org.

If you look at yourself and your life, if you’re married, would you say that marriage “seems” to be a natural thing or something imposed on you by our cultural norms? Perhaps in our current society the rules of the game have changed from our ancestors whose biggest priorities of the day were finding food and shelter. We now have a society in which food is as close as the nearest 7-Eleven and shelter is abundantly available. So where does that leave man when it comes to the reasons for pairing up and even more importantly, staying together?

Profit vs Health Care in the U.S.

image1.jpg

I don’t know if you have been following the health care debate but Bush’s last statement regarding the accessibility of health care really stunned me. He has proven once again that big business and corporate profits trump the good of the public. He was quoted on The American Prospect as saying “The immediate goal is to make sure there are more people on private insurance plans. I mean, people have access to health care in America, after all, you just go to an emergency room.” Bush’s ignorant stand on health care and his dismissive remark reminds me of the arrogant and cynical comment widely attributed to Marie-Antoinette…”Let them eat cake.” As with Marie-Antoinette, is there no end to Bush’s callous disregard for humanity? When it comes to policy issues, he again shows his hand as being loyal only to profit and in health care that can possibly spell the end of someone’s life.

Captcha: The Future of Global Problem Solving!

spamtest.jpg
Captcha, an example of human ingenuity.

When thinking about society, one visualizes many individual parts making up the whole. Each of these parts work separately to perform tasks. With each person representing a discrete packet of energy, then only certain limited tasks can be accomplished. But what if all the discrete packets of energy came together to perform a task, then perhaps many of society’s problems could be tackled. These are the ideas that keep going through the head of a genius who last winter, was awarded a $500,000 MacArthur genius grant, and in April, was awarded another $200,000 as one of Microsoft’s New Faculty fellows. The way this man’s brain works is very unlike how ours works. And, what makes him so different is what may contribute to solving large scale societal problems. You may be surprised how his thinking leads to a form of computerized collaborative programing.
