Is the Human Out of Warranty?

lewis_hine_power_house_mechanic_working_on_steam_pump.jpg
Can we repair our bio-machine?

What if the human body had a warranty? Well, it may actually have one, but you are probably voiding it right at this moment. Mental stress and overly abundant food may two of the major culprits to our societies’ collective decline in health.

Ever wonder why stress is a killer, and why it plagues our civilization? What about why the foods that we crave are the worst for us? Our original blueprint for human survival may be a key to some of life’s ultimate questions. This blueprint for our bodies was designed by hundreds of thousands of years of evolution (unless you believe God created us just as we are right now, then your answer would be God didn’t think us through very well or is simply a cruel being). So we need to think back to the environment and lifestyle that triggered the evolutionary changes that made us what we are.

UPDATE: Smarter Through Sleep

notible articleUPDATE:

Snipped from the SciAm.com.

Here is an update on the phenomenon of how our brains may be consolidating — the conversion of short term memory into long term memory — our days experiences while we sleep. This helping us not only create a more solidified neural network for quicker and easier access to our memories, but also helping build more of a nuanced recall of learnt subjects or actions and their relationships.

Safe Toys and Safe Food Products, Finally?

recalled_toys.jpg
Health vs. Brighter Colors

Where is that final straw that breaks the camel’s back? The one incident so horrific that finally there’s a change in method and in policy? I’m talking about the situation in China and elsewhere that causes all those toys-to-toothpaste recalls. We’ve given them thirty second-chances, and still…

The latest toys recall was another Mattel recall of Fisher-Price kitchen toys. Not lead paint this time, but poorly-designed toys made in Mexico such that the parts come off for children to swallow. In response to this recall, Scott Wolfson of the Consumer Products Safety Commission said:

“Stop White House Power Grab”

notible article

Snipped from the Union of Concerned Scientists.

What if I told you that the White House is looking for more power over many of our federal agencies? Power that is not supposed to be in the hands of the Administration. Would you be surprised? Would you do something about it? What if it had something to do with our health, our science, our truth? Well, here it is. The White House is looking for another power grab, and it involves agencies that deal with public health and environmental regulation. How do you feel about your health being in the hands of Dubya? Well, then do something about it … Now!

Depleted Uranium: Iraq’s Agent Orange

Here we go again. Another hideous legacy from another catastrophic war which never should have happened. I don’t know if you guys remember the devastating effects of agent orange on returning Vietnam vets’ health that the government denied for a couple of decades. Well, it was real after all, and even became known as the Gulf War Syndrome. Now we have an even more serious and deadly attack on our U.S. soldiers and it’s not from IEDs or bullets. It’s called “depleted uranium” and it comes from exploded tanks and armored vehicles. This is the stuff that the U.S. military is most proud of because it is very effective at penetrating armored vehicles. It accomplishes its task by using radioactive chemicals which are known as depleted uranium. What happens is as these munitions explode they diffuse a substance that hits the air as fine dust which is easily inhaled. Of course, again, the Pentagon is denying that any ill health has resulted from depleted uranium. So, what is going on with our returning soldiers that is causing them to die from extremely aggressive cancers?

Health Alert: Lead Exposure and Cataracts

Being that I have had very high levels of lead in my body for which I have had years of treatment, I can relate to the dangerous side effects from lead poisoning. The funny thing about it is that I got it down to an acceptable level about 2 years ago with treatment, got off treatment, then the high levels came right back. It just shows you how incredibly polluted our environment is. Well, now it seems that another dangerous side effect of lead is cataracts. All the findings that keep coming out about the high levels of environmental toxins, chemicals and heavy metals is frightening. Now we have one more reason to be concerned.

Health Alert: Drugs in our Water Supply?

safety.jpg

Okay, folks, anyone who has been following this blog is familiar with my Health Alerts that warn the public about safety and health concerns that exist in our environment today. If you would like to check them out, just click on Health Alerts in our archive section. You will be amazed at the volume of warnings that exist today. This one pretty much takes the cake though. This time you have to worry about antidepressants, birth control pills, pain killers or just about any other drug that gets flushed down the toilet showing up in our drinking water. It seems that our water supply systems are not designed to filter out the myriad assortment of drugs that people mindlessly dispose of when they are out of date or don’t need anymore. I guess this could also include mind altering drugs for which illicit users are known to flush at the first sign of trouble. So, how is it that we are finding drugs in our water supply and what should you do about it?

The Link Between Autism and Environmental Toxins

autism.jpg

I don’t know how many times I have watched documentaries or read articles about autism that reported that “we just don’t know what causes it”. When there exists a frightening statistic that 1 out of 150 children are being diagnosed with some type of autism today, there should be alarm bells going off. I am disgusted by our government’s current lack of attention to this urgent health care crisis. What limited research that is being done today is just beginning to unravel the mysteries of this daunting childhood affliction now termed “Autism Spectrum Disorder”. Scientists are just beginning to find out that there may be a link between autism and a number of immune and neurological disorders to environmental toxins. This would account for the wide spectrum of autism symptoms that children exhibit due to the array of molecular dialogue that occurs between our genes and the environment. This to me is pretty frightening considering the vast amount of pollution that exists in our environment. Just what exactly is going on between our genes and the never ending exposure to environmental toxins?

Profit vs Health Care in the U.S.

image1.jpg

I don’t know if you have been following the health care debate but Bush’s last statement regarding the accessibility of health care really stunned me. He has proven once again that big business and corporate profits trump the good of the public. He was quoted on The American Prospect as saying “The immediate goal is to make sure there are more people on private insurance plans. I mean, people have access to health care in America, after all, you just go to an emergency room.” Bush’s ignorant stand on health care and his dismissive remark reminds me of the arrogant and cynical comment widely attributed to Marie-Antoinette…”Let them eat cake.” As with Marie-Antoinette, is there no end to Bush’s callous disregard for humanity? When it comes to policy issues, he again shows his hand as being loyal only to profit and in health care that can possibly spell the end of someone’s life.

The Link Between Stress and Obesity

images.jpg
Stay calm, it may save
your waistline.

You may be one of those people who eat excessively whenever depressed or sad but now researchers are finding that even simple stress can make us fat. With our modern-day, high-tech, stressed-out world, it’s no wonder that so many people are overweight. Could this be the hidden element behind so much obesity today? From an intriguing experiment with laboratory mice, scientists are now beginning to understand what part stress plays in obesity. You will be amazed at what happened with a group of otherwise slim mice when subjected to daily stress.
