VIDEO: Rapper/Activist NAS takes on FOX News

NAS vs. FOX
I have always been a fan of Rap, not the new, fake, materialist, shallow rap, I am talking about the deep, progressive, socio-political movement called Rap. Remember Grandmaster Flash with White Lines; NWA with their songs about political injustices within the black communities; Public Enemy and nearly all of their work? It was about getting all of America to listen to what was really happening to the blacks in America. Shining a light on the shadows of African-American life, and conjuring up a conscious awareness to what was happening beneath the veneer of white media.
With that being said, I have been severely let down with the direction that rap has gone. I truly believe it has started to turn in on itself and create just as many injustices for the blacks as it tried to alleviate in the past. But, here is the good news. There are still some artists out their that have not lost their way. They have remembered what Rap really means, and how powerful it can be. Mos Def, The Roots, Urban Mystic and once in a while NAS will come out and blow me away. One of NAS’s best is still One Mic, in my honest opinion of course.
Well, now NAS has a new one. It doesn’t have that same organic, vulnerable, honesty that One Mic has, but it is powerful, political and down right entertaining. Without further ado, here is Sly Fox by NAS:

Long time no comment, hows it been?
I think its sad that rap and hip-hop has for the most part been de-clawed. But as you point out there are still a few. I’m at work so I had to just go read the lyrics but I look forward to watching that video.
A couple more artists I’d throw on that list are Dead Prez and The Coup. And if you like Hip-hop with ideals then check out Dave Chapelles Block Party. Most of the groups you named are part of it, the most inspirational part has to be Wyclef talking to a group of college kids.
Hey Kilgore, how have you been. I miss being real active on the whole blog circuit. School has just been killing all my time.
Anyways, I have been meaning to watch Block Party, but just never got around to it. Maybe I just need to take the hit and watch it (pun intended, ah?). Thanks for keeping up with old Blog4Brains. I try to come by your site now and then and comment as well. Check you later as I have to write a presentation about HIV.
