America’s Past, Present and Future

twintowers.jpg
The catalyst for irrationality.

America’s future (maybe even the world’s), in my opinion, will all boil down to who will be elected the next president of the United States.

I strongly believe the world is watching and listening to what we are going to do with this constitutionally given elective power. 2008 will most likely be the most important political year in our generation, if not in the last 100 years.

If we elect another “everyday” political hawk, democrat OR republican, we will turn down a path that will lead us to a darker and more unAmerican future, and the point of no return will probably be passed. But, If we choose one of the unlikely candidates like Kucinich, Paul or maybe even Obama, we may be able to turn around this country, and potentially even our global image for the good.

No Neosporin, No Cough Medicine? Use Honey!

notible article

Snipped from SciAm.com.

Wow, has honey got some press to be proud of?! It seems that there really is some truth to the old wives tales that honey really is a cure all. In November, honey seemed to get some very late, but not forgotten, recognition that it can be successfully used as an antibiotic ointment for small cuts, abrasions and sores. The in December, it got the recognition for being a better nighttime cough medicine for children (older than 1 year old of course).

Scientific American: Week in Review

notible article

Snipped from SciAm.com.

Here is some snack food for the brain. SciAm went out and got some hard evidence for the everyday wonders — ever wonder about cell phone use and brain tumors, if certain creams can make your thighs thinner, or if you are smarter than a chimp? Well, then you will love this little bite-size review of this week’s science news.

“Scientists Cure Mice With Sickle Cell”

notible article

Snipped from AP.com.

Remember a couple of weeks ago when there was a big uproar about reprogramming skin cells into stem cells. Well, here is something quite interesting that they have done with such reprogrammed cells. In this article the scientists discuss how they have “cured” mice with sickle cell anemia — a deadly genetic disease that distorts the shape of the red blood cells, limiting the amount of oxygen that they can “carry”.

George vs. Mahmoud: Round Two!

notible article

Snipped from HeraldNews.com.

We all know about this new report coming out about Iran, right? How it reports that Iran put a halt on the nuclear research four years ago. Well, we have Bush saying that the report doesn’t matter, and how “Nothing Has Changed With Iran.” Then on the other end of the spectrum you have Mahmoud Ahmadinejad saying that the “new intelligence review [is] a victory for Iran’s nuclear program, suggesting it shows the success of his hard-line stance rejecting compromise.”

America: What Are You Afraid Of?

scaredlook.jpg
Scared? Of What?

What is the world’s biggest threat to global security? Can you guess? Osama bin Laden? A nuclear Iran? George Bush?

Actually, no. A large collection of intellectually and culturally challenged people with a significant amount of power is the world’s biggest threat. Does this sound familiar? Well, it’s real. All too real. For those that are a little slow, I am referring to American citizens; the ones that never venture outside of their own ethnic, religious or cultural bubble.

“A Hidden Cause of Headache Pain”

notible article

Snipped from NYTimes.com.

Want to stop your chronic headaches or migraines? Then you may want to stop medicating them. New research is showing that the very medications that are designed to treat pain, can actually cause it. It is called a rebound episode and is similar to a hangover. Unfortunately, people too often grab that same medication that caused it to treat it, furthering its cycle.

Malaria, Dengue Fever: Treat Mosquitos, Not Humans

notible article

Snipped from SciAm.com.

Well if this isn’t the most interesting way to treat mosquito born illnesses. Here is the premise: Instead of killing off all the mosquitos — a portion of food chain, and a necessary organism for agriculture — trying to stave off illnesses, just treat them with antibiotics. Now, I am not normally a fan of the use of pharmaceuticals, especially on animals, but I like it over its alternative — killing them all.

“The Lynching Tree and the Cross” — Part I

ishot-1.jpg
“I AM A MAN.” A sign worn by those
that wanted equal treatment.

The lynching tree and the Christian cross. This may sound like an antagonistic pairing of symbols, but after listening to a very enlightening man named James Cone, it made me not only see the light in its relationship, but how to bridge the gap of a century’s old American sin.

This man with his oddly raspy, slightly “Cosby-ish” voice speaks nothing short of volumes, you can’t help but be drawn into his story. Now that I have been educated to this “terribly beautiful” relationship of the two most powerfully evil and godly symbols, it is now upon me to share this newly learned perspective with the rest of my “brothers”, white, and black.

“Do-gooders Can Become the Worst Cheats”

notible article

Snipped from the MSNBC.MSN.com.

A “sense of moral superiority might lead to rationalizing bad behavior.” I guess that about sums it up for me. I don’t think I have much to add to that. This is a very interesting read though. Please take a moment to read over this study. It will just reenforce, in a very objective way, what you have thought about all the hypocrites that call themselves “conservatives”.
