America: What Are You Afraid Of?

Scared? Of What?
What is the world’s biggest threat to global security? Can you guess? Osama bin Laden? A nuclear Iran? George Bush?
Actually, no. A large collection of intellectually and culturally challenged people with a significant amount of power is the world’s biggest threat. Does this sound familiar? Well, it’s real. All too real. For those that are a little slow, I am referring to American citizens; the ones that never venture outside of their own ethnic, religious or cultural bubble.
FEAR … it’s what motivates them, gets them out of bed, sways their vote and makes them consume material items. These people are fueled by what scares them. Whether it is some Islamic sounding name, or the Joneses having more “toys”. They are all limbic system and no prefrontal cortex, more afraid to lose their Wii than their civil rights.
These are your neighbors, your friends, your boss and your children, and well … maybe even you. These are the ones that take everything at face value, never analyzing, observing, searching for alternative meanings or consequences. The ones that do what they are told because they can’t fathom anything different. Whether it was religion that taught them to never question, or the bad parents that just beat “conformism” into them. In the end, it doesn’t really matter, what matters is trying to move this country forward, but that won’t happen until we can reach the majority of this country’s people.
POWER?! These people have an innate, constitutional given power. They make up the majority of this country, and with nearly the whole world looking at us to correct the mistakes we made in 2000 and 2004, we can’t afford to let this group hold us back. They can and may completely ruin our credibility with the rest of world, because then we have no excuse. We will be complete accomplices in The Administration’s pre-emptive wars, illegal occupations, imperialism, bullying, lies and corruption.
We already look complacent. We could’ve replaced him in 2004, but because of FEAR, we couldn’t risk it with Kerry. We could have impeached him, but we are at war. We could’ve forced congress to de-fund the war, but we have to support the troops. I mean come on, we could’ve done something, anything! We nearly kicked Clinton out of office because he lied about getting a blow job. Yet, we can’t hold Bush and company accountable with ALL that he has done. So why is that?
Well, America is paralyzed by fear. In fear, we can’t take any chances, we just won’t risk it. So, instead of being a strong, united country hell bent on doing the right thing, we do nothing. We had guts with Clinton because there was nothing to fear, so it was easy to force accountability on him, cast him aside like we were tough. Recently we have only been strong when it doesn’t count, when it doesn’t matter, when the world isn’t counting on us, but it hasn’t always been this way.
“But, you just don’t impeach someone when we are at war,” says a local radio personality here in Central Texas. But, are we too ignorant to remember Nixon? Back in 1974, Nixon was on his way to be impeached while America was still involved with Vietnam. This is our Vietnam, so why can’t we impeach our Nixon (by the way, Nixon barely did anything wrong compared to Bush and Company)?

“I’m not a crook.”
Well, do you do it, push for change, impeach, de-fund, elect Kucinich, Paul, Obama? You do it because that’s when it counts. That’s when the world is counting on you, hoping that this time around, you will show courage, valor and honor — the American spirit.
That one thing that you fear to do the most, is the one thing the you have to act on. Your actions in time of fear is what defines who you are, and so far America has done a very poor job of defining what America should be. At least from what our nation’s founding fathers originally defined for us — independent, non-reactive, neutral, humble and honorable.
America should be the most fearless country, the one to handle everything with confidence and valor. We should be proactive and not reactive. Yet we are just the opposite. We fear everything, wage wars on everything and oppress many things.
In the end, we need to ask ourselves what we are you willing to pay for. The price of freedom (honor), or the price of security (fear)? I would rather pay for my freedom, because in the end, I will always have my pride and honor intact. What will you be remembered for?
