Profit vs Health Care in the U.S.

image1.jpg

I don’t know if you have been following the health care debate but Bush’s last statement regarding the accessibility of health care really stunned me. He has proven once again that big business and corporate profits trump the good of the public. He was quoted on The American Prospect as saying “The immediate goal is to make sure there are more people on private insurance plans. I mean, people have access to health care in America, after all, you just go to an emergency room.” Bush’s ignorant stand on health care and his dismissive remark reminds me of the arrogant and cynical comment widely attributed to Marie-Antoinette…”Let them eat cake.” As with Marie-Antoinette, is there no end to Bush’s callous disregard for humanity? When it comes to policy issues, he again shows his hand as being loyal only to profit and in health care that can possibly spell the end of someone’s life.

Bloggers on Iraq Progress Report

notible article

Snipped from Slate.com.

If you were evaluating a progress report in which 18 benchmarks were laid out and only 8 of those 18 had been met, would you consider the project a success or even “promising”? Uh, no. As a former corporate executive, I would seriously look at scrapping the project, especially since it has taken over four years to get to that point, and devise a new strategy. Any logical person would. But we are dealing with a Commander Guy who doesn’t deal in reality only ideology. And, his ideology has no room for logic. I came across an article that gives highlights of what some of those in the blogosphere are saying about the recent Iraq progress report. I believe it reflects how many of us feel. You may be surprised by what some of the bloggers are saying.

The Link Between Stress and Obesity

images.jpg
Stay calm, it may save
your waistline.

You may be one of those people who eat excessively whenever depressed or sad but now researchers are finding that even simple stress can make us fat. With our modern-day, high-tech, stressed-out world, it’s no wonder that so many people are overweight. Could this be the hidden element behind so much obesity today? From an intriguing experiment with laboratory mice, scientists are now beginning to understand what part stress plays in obesity. You will be amazed at what happened with a group of otherwise slim mice when subjected to daily stress.

Tough Talk on Impeachment

notible article

Snipped from PBS.org.

Yes, the “I” word has come back into play big time which seems to be as a result of King George’s latest abuse of power which was the commutation of Scooter Libby. This almost seems like the straw that broke the camel’s back because the American public is angered by Bush’s blatant disregard for the rule of law by putting his cronies and himself above it. If you didn’t catch Bill Moyer’s interview of Bruce Fein, the nationally and internationally recognized expert on Constitutional law (who by the way is a conservative) and John Nichols of The Nation magazine, then you should check out the article and the video linked below. It is the most educated discourse I have seen on just what is happening to our country and why impeachment is the only fix for a president who is out of control.

New Report: Accelerated Climate Catastrophe

notible article

Snipped from AlterNet.org.

Do you feel that if one is constantly presented with bad news that after a while the person becomes numb to the effects of the bad news? Can a whole society become numb to catastrophic predictions involving climate change? I feel we have reached the tipping point in our news saturation of global warming and its dire effects and are experiencing sensory overload. We have heard so much devastating news about our future that we can’t even seem to process it anymore much less respond. So, when a news release exposes even more devastating discoveries that compounds the global threat of climate change, no one even blinks an eye. What will have to happen before the global society takes measures to seriously address this threat? There was news today reported in AlterNet.org that certainly should make all of us wake up and do something.

Not Really Breaking News

notible article

Snipped from DailyKos.com.

Well, just when you think you have heard the last of the Bush/Rove political machinations, there breaks another news story exposing once again Bush politics trumping science. This time it has to do with our ex-U.S. Surgeon General Vice Adm. Richard Carmona. It has really amazed me how anyone would even have the nerve to challenge science with theology, ideology and preconceived beliefs that were scientifically incorrect. But leave it to Bush and Co. and you have them once again suppressing information and twisting facts all for the sake of the complete domination of government by the Republican party. You won’t believe what this eminent doctor had to endure during his term as the Surgeon General.

Captcha: The Future of Global Problem Solving!

spamtest.jpg
Captcha, an example of human ingenuity.

When thinking about society, one visualizes many individual parts making up the whole. Each of these parts work separately to perform tasks. With each person representing a discrete packet of energy, then only certain limited tasks can be accomplished. But what if all the discrete packets of energy came together to perform a task, then perhaps many of society’s problems could be tackled. These are the ideas that keep going through the head of a genius who last winter, was awarded a $500,000 MacArthur genius grant, and in April, was awarded another $200,000 as one of Microsoft’s New Faculty fellows. The way this man’s brain works is very unlike how ours works. And, what makes him so different is what may contribute to solving large scale societal problems. You may be surprised how his thinking leads to a form of computerized collaborative programing.

The Dark Side of Soy

notible article

Snipped from alternet.org.

I have written many articles on this blog exposing the hidden dangers in our food. With extensive industrialization of agriculture and the genetic modifications occurring in the food cell itself, there’s no wonder that many food sources have been contaminated, polluted and tainted in more ways than one. But there is one food source that in and of itself is actually proclaimed to be a harbinger of good health, but in fact is a danger to your health. This food source is soy. Yeah, I know, the mainstream food giants tout it as a miracle food that not only promotes heart health, but alleviates symptoms associated with menopause, reduces the risk of certain cancers, and lowers levels of the “bad” cholesterol. Well, coming from the $4 billion soy industry, do you think maybe their claims are only reporting the “good side” of soy? When questioned, they will only refer to the FDA’s approval for their health claims. But little is known about the “dark side” of soy that the FDA’s own top scientists kept silent about. So, what is it that these top scientists are keeping under wraps?

Our Democracy — Sold to the Highest Bidder: Part II

us-congress-dollar-puppet.jpg

In Part I of this series of articles we discussed the shift that has taken place in America in which voters are expressing sympathy towards more liberal ideals. What we are not seeing is a shift in our government that aligns with what the people want. It appears that time and again, Congress yields to big business and special interest groups over what the majority of the people want. With PR firms and lobbying groups raking in millions of dollars from these clients, they have millions to throw at our congressional leaders. Have you ever wondered just what goes on behind the closed doors and in the smoke-filled rooms of Congress? In this article, we will explore the revelations of an undercover journalist who cracks open the questionable and unethical practices employed by two of the nation’s top lobbying firms. What he uncovers will certainly help you understand what has happened to our democracy.

Health Alert: What’s Behind Genetically Modified Food?

35525.jpg
Yummy, cloned corn!

If you don’t know what genetically engineered food is then it’s time you learn. I thought it just meant that it was altered somehow (innocuously) to make food better. But after reading up on the subject, I am sad to report that it has more to do with making a better profit than making better food. When over three fourths of processed food is genetically engineered, we need to not only learn what it is but start speaking up regarding our concern for what it is doing to our food supply and us. Again, the consumer is at the bottom of the list of priorities when it comes to what Agribusiness is up to. You may be surprised to learn what genetic engineering means to our health, the environment and the future of agriculture.
