Defund the Iraq War — Not So Fast!

Snipped from dailykos.com
For any of you out there (like over two-thirds of the American public) who want to see the war in Iraq end, you are probably thinking that the Democrats can always defund the war. I mean, after all, this is a Constitutional power that Congress has and should use to stop a war-mongering President who is out of control. But not so fast! Can Congress really stop a President who has already proven that he will stop at nothing to get his way? I ran across an article that mentions a fairly obscure paragraph from a report by the Congressional Research Service entitled, “A Defense Budget Primer” that may mean that Bush can still get his way even if Congress takes his money away. You will be surprised at just how much power the President really has, especially in light of “national security interests”.
We should be concerned especially since Bush has already proven to be a slippery character when it comes to evading the truth. Just look at his non-stop “Executive Privilege” argument any time Congress wants answers. Then there’s the Scooter Libby commutation which in reality proves to be a very effective method for obstructing justice…all perfectly legal mind you. Now, when we think we have the ultimate weapon of last resort which is defunding the war, there is a little wrinkle that may prove to be another way for Bush to skirt around the money problem and continue his escapades in Iraq.
Here is a portion of the article that will make you shudder at the prospect of power that the President really has.
If Congress fails to pass regular appropriations acts by the beginning of the fiscal year on October 1, DOD (and other affected agencies) can be left with no money to pay personnel, fund daily operations, or execute new contracts. Standing law allows essential government activities, including national security-related functions, to continue even in the absence of funding, but non-essential programs may not continue, and day-to-day agency operations are disrupted.
Can anybody envision this “administration” declining to classify Iraq operations as national security-related?
This is why I keep insisting that the only solution to stopping an administration who is out of control is to impeach not only Bush but Cheney. This is the only way we could once and for all put a stop to all the political grid-lock and impotence of an elected body and finally execute the will of the people that it is supposed to represent. Just think of the problems that it would solve not only in the U.S. but think of the image it would convey to the world of a strong democracy in demonstrating the voice of the American people. It would properly represent a people who are sickened by years of abuse of human rights, civil rights and broad abuse of power by the only true super power of the world. It would do wonders for our image overseas, not to mention re-focusing our priorities on what really matters, like getting the real terrorists who were behind 9/11.

Hey I’ve been slackin lately but don’t worry I haven’t forgotten my friends.
As for this article, man thanks for the pick me up. I don’t think anyone in congress has the gumption to defund the war anyway, but now I find out that it probably wouldn’t work anyway. Damn.
What options do we have left? Impeachment, coup d’etat?
