Earth’s Mysterious Holes — What Are They?!

Snipped from EnglishRussia.com and Dagbladet.no.
As I was doing my normal surfing to find interesting things for B4B, I came across this interesting web page. This page had pictures of strange holes in the ground near Russia. They are really deep, allegedly unexplainable and in the middle of a forest in Siberia. While I was searching the net trying to find an answer to what they might be, I ran across some explanations that I have never heard of and can’t find any real information on — tree molds, geological potholes and/or “Dr. Evil’s Freakin’ Laser Beam”. Now, since I am not a geologist, I thought I would post this as more of a question, so… what in the hell are these holes?! [pictures below].

Then after finding nothing to explain it, I ran across this web page. Now I know it is a sinkhole, but holy crap! It looks more like the ground blew out instead of fell in. The article says it is 100 meters deep?! Now I have heard of a sinkhole being more of a depression in the ground, but this is more like an actual hole. Here is the picture:

How in the hell does that happen to such an extent?! Please, help me out.

we get sink holes here in penna.we have a lot of under ground mines.water flows through them.say there is an under ground river flowing in a spot that has sandy soil.rain starts a little hole too the river.more rain ,hole gets bigger.now a really heavy rain comes down.the hole starts to cone out and up.like having a funnel upside down.when it finally gets big enough.wham, the whole top falls in.sink hole!hope this explains it good enough.
Yea, actually that does explain it. May I ask where Penna is? Thanks for coming by.
I believe the big sink hole pictured was created by a water main that burst. Water gushed out of the pipe and started to eat away at the soil, and then moved that soil back down the pipe. It get eating away a very large area, until the roof was so thin that it collapsed in one go. Apparently people living in the area could feel vibrations for days/weeks beforehand. If I remember correctly 2 kids died.
