Geico’s Cavemen Coming to ABC This Fall

Geico Caveman
The infamous Geico Caveman.

Yes, that’s right. ABC is capitalizing on the popularity of the Geico cavemen ads and is spinning off on its own “Cavemen” sitcom series this fall.

So you’ll get to see your favorites, Nick Kroll and Dash Mihok, play the cavemen you have come to love. It’s a gamble, but ABC is betting that you want to know more about the antics of cavemen in the modern, fast-paced, bigoted world of today. Opps, did I say bigoted? Well, it’s not exactly a slip of the tongue. Guess what the creators of the show are going for?

Yep, according to New York Daily News, they are hyping the idea that “Cavemen” will be an allegory for racial tensions in America. Hey, I always say, never miss an opportunity to exploit racism — it beats political correctness any day [just kidding]. The one thing that they can count on though is that whenever anyone knocks the cavemen on the show, there isn’t any political group or special interest who will be offended… right?

Well, think again. They have already created a civil rights web site to accuse Geico of advertising prejudice. Leave it to the web to spawn a civil rights movement for an extinct race of people [smile]. Their motto is “Cavemen are people too.” You can check out this latest of web oddities to jump on the bandwagon here: upwithcavemen.com. Here is their Mission Statement:

As America’s oldest and largest caveman civil rights organization, Up With Cavemen works with a unified voice to ensure that cavemen everywhere, no matter their physical appearance, can live open, honest lives.

Then there is always the ever-so-popular website in which Web surfers can infiltrate the cavemen’s swanky apartment and play with their belongings. You can go through their play list of favorite music and listen while you’re thumbing through their magazines, or reading a few of their books including War and Peace and see what’s for dinner. For those curiosity seekers and just downright loony people who get their kicks by messing with cavemen’s stuff, go to cavemanscrib.com. Don’t you just love the internet?

Well, we’ll see how this new series, which was created by ad genius Joe Lawson, will do against its tough competitors such as “The Office”, “30 Rock”, “My Name is Earl” and “Desperate Housewives”. But, you can count on the fact that ABC will be creating a lot of buzz this summer hyping their new show. Who knows, maybe it will be the next “Max Headroom”, quirky and weird. At any rate, it will be interesting to see how they handle the obvious prejudice and scorn these cavemen will receive in their every day life. So, I guess I’ll check them out in the fall because as far as I’m concerned, some of their rivals have grown stale. See you in the fall, Nick and Dash!

Update: Ouch, trailer does not look good. I hope this was just to test some ideas. Here is the preview for the show.
