Twittering: The New Rapid Fire Blogging

If you feel like blogging has taken on a mind of its own, you should get to know the new rage in social application software. It’s an internet tool called Twitter that let’s you post brief updates about your everyday thoughts and activities. They are posted by the minute to the Web via browser, cell phone, or IM. It’s blogging taken to a new extreme level. Twitter’s constant-contact medium allows friends or just anyone to know where you are and what you are doing minute to minute. Why has this new medium become the rage?

“The Redirection” (Or Just An Excuse to Bomb Iran?)

Snipped from newyorker.com.
As though Bush’s foreign policy hasn’t done enough damage to our global reputation as an arrogant imperialist, we apparently are in the process of planning attacks on another country which is not an imminent threat. It appears that the Pentagon is continuing intensive planning for a possible bombing attack on Iran, a process that began last year, at the direction of the President. However, I smell a rat and its name is Dick. Why Congress is allowing this loose canon to continue to plot his evil intentions behind the scenes is beyond me. You won’t believe what Cheney and Company is up to now.

Health Alert: Beauty Products’ Five Pound Body Burden

What are you really
putting on your face?
Is our dangerous obsession with beauty more than skin deep?
With women slathering over twenty different beauty products on their face and body every day, it is no wonder that they are under a constant barrage of chemicals. What is alarming today is that we rely too much on the government to keep us safe from dangerous chemicals, so we buy anything off the shelf that promises to make us smoother, cleaner, fresher, and wrinkle-free. But what we are getting instead is a five pound burden of chemicals that we absorb through our skin every year. Many of these chemicals have already proven to be toxic. This article is intended to make your journey through the beauty aisle more of an informed quest for safe products instead of a guinea pig for untested beauty potions.

How Well Do You Know Your Candidates?

Ah, damn it!
Okay, so you’ve been a good American citizen and have listened to all the presidential debates so that you will be an informed voter. So, do you think you know your candidates? You may be surprised that it may be very difficult to differentiate between them. Why? Because they use “poli-speak” (a term I coined). This means that they speak a political language in which they don’t actually say anything. In order to test your candidate savy, I have provided quotes below taken from speeches that the candidates have made. It will be up to you to match the quote(s) with the candidate. Good luck.

The Next “Compromise” On Iraq?

Snipped from dailykos.com.
Were you encouraged by Senate Republican Richard Lugar’s statement on the Senate floor that sounded like Republicans may be on the verge of caving on the Iraq War issue? I was. But unfortunately this may just be another political maneuver by the White House to set the stage for a “compromise” minus the timeline for withdrawal from Iraq. The one thing you can count on about politics is that nothing is ever the way it appears. Someone is always pulling the levers behind the curtain. The political hanky panky is enough to make one truly distrust our American way of democracy. So, it looks like we may be heading for another round of weak Democratic pandering to the Republican’s lock-in-step with the President.

10 Year Olds & Toxic Accumulation

Our kids may be more
affected by toxins than we think.
New finding show young children with heavy toxic burdens
Would you believe that right now your body, the one you have nurtured, fed and taken care of for years, (and I might say, the only one you have), may contain up to 40 toxic chemicals? And, if you have children, even your ten-year-old may harbor as many, if not more. I have been writing many Health Alert articles warning consumers and parents of the increasing concern for all the toxic chemicals we are all exposed to every day. In this regard, I came across an article about a research study that tested for man-made chemicals found in homes, offices and people and what they found may surprise you.

“Hey Dude, Where’s My Vacation?”

Snipped from alternet.org.
Have you ever wondered why Americans seem to have no time and most working families feel exhausted and drained? Well, it’s because of our government’s failure to support “the little guy” and favor businesses’ bottom line instead. I find it incredible that the richest country in the world doesn’t mandate employer’s to pay for sick time or vacation. And, for those who work for companies who have no benefits such as this, life becomes extremely difficult. You may say that small businesses can’t afford to pay workers for time off, but when you hear about what other countries are doing, you may change your mind. And I guarantee, you will be envious.

Do We Understand Our Teens’ Behavior?

What are we doing
to our kids?
So do we understand them? Obviously not!
What we understand as fact about our very own children may be completely wrong and not only confusing our teens, but making them worse. As a teen, you are bombarded by everything and everyone that conveys to you that you are not ready — ready to drink, ready to drive, ready to have sex, ready for responsibility, ready for life. Adults say that even though you feel you are ready, you are not, and that is just fact. So teens are caught in this limbo of life. You feel invincible, ready to take everything on and experience what life has to offer, and then bam! You are faced with extreme opposition from society — “you’re not ready!”, they say.

Would You Shoot an Innocent Anonymously?

Wanna shoot me?!
Accidental experiment shows that many people would shoot an innocent person (with paintballs) if kept anonymous.
In my daily scan of the internet, I was stopped cold in my tracks when I came across an article that detailed an Iraqi artist’s attempt to portray the cruelty of war in a quirky, unconventional way. This was from a man who knew the Iraq War up close and personal. He lived it from his arrest as a dissident under Suddam Hussein’s regime, to spending two years in a Saudi refugee camp, to his brother being killed by shrapnel in Najaf. He lived the war experience and wanted others to understand the fear and stress that result from it.

“US doctor smeared for raising drug concerns”

Snipped from NewScientist.com.
Well, here is more proof that our government has higher priorities in making money than protecting its citizens. Here the FDA has too quickly approved a drug for insulin resistance and diabetes. Now they are paying the price, but instead of just taking it off the shelves and admitting fault, what do they do? Yep, they try to keep it secret and scare physicians into staying quite about its deadly side effects. A good a smear campaign for anyone that is willing to speak up about safety.
