Statue of Liberty

Have you ever got misty-eyed when the National Anthem was played or the stars and strips unfurled? There is so much to be proud of in this country. We, a strong nation with a cultural diversity of legal and illegal immigrants [smile], have always pursued being number one in everything because we are America damn it! This has always been something to be proud of. Well, fellow Americans, we certainly are number one in many important categories. Blog4Brains wants to remind everyone just how much we have to be proud of in this nation. Check it out…

“…grounds for claim of atheism firing”

Snipped from Boston.com.

I don’t know what makes me angrier, fanatical religious believers themselves or when the lack of belief within someone else incites bigotry towards that individual. I thought we came over here from England to escape religious persecution? Or was it to decimate an entire race of indigenous people in the name of God? I can never remember which it was. Well anyways, I ran across this article, and it made me want to vomit. Here we have someone that got fired after the employer found out he was an atheist.

“What It Means To Be Secure”

Snipped from The Huffington Post.

The extreme duality that I have been so frustrated with has had little media attention. We are too used to the polarization of so many aspects of our lives that we seem to forget that a whole world of grey is out there. I bring this up because in the wake of the dems and repubs going against each other in the race to the White House, we have been prey to the polarization that the two parties create. Your either a spineless weak democrat or a militant hawk republican, and if you do not fit within the mold you are an outcast. Just look at Ron Paul or Mike Gravel. We need to help redefine what it means to live in a free society… free meaning the allowance of all viewpoints, not just the ones that fit right or left.

predicament to reporters. Photo: AFP

What happens when a controversial madam who services high-profile, Washington clients steps in front of the microphone?

She spills the beans, of course, and names names. The results are often devastating to those who are named, but what is particularly hilarious is that the overtly religious and/or self-proclaimed conservatives always seem to be the ones who get nailed in this type of “sinful” activity. So, what’s the scoop on the latest Republican sex scandal involving Ms. Palfrey? Well, you will be disgusted by this latest Republican perversion that hurt thousands of innocent people.

Immigration, Not Just an American Problem

Immigration Stamp

When we think of the burgeoning immigration crisis here in the U.S., we think we are the only ones who are struggling with this all too human and highly charged political problem.

This is also a major political issue of upcoming local elections in Spain, it affected the recent national elections in France, and with the public killing of Theo van Gogh in Holland for making a ten minute movie about violence against Muslim women, immigration and the radical views that often come with it have become an ever increasing concern in Europe. What’s even more scary is the addition of Islamic law making its way into German courts. The New York Times reported “A German judge has stirred a storm of protest here by citing the Koran in turning down a German Muslim woman’s request for a fast-track divorce on the ground that her husband beat her.” What is driving all the mass migration, and why should we be concerned?

What does Yawning and Autism Have in Common?

yawning.jpg
Don’t yawn, whatever you do!

Did you yawn just looking at this picture? Why are such common everyday actions so misunderstood and mysterious to us?

Let’s start with this very common action of yawning. The original hypothesis of yawning was when the body had a build up of carbon dioxide and lack of oxygen, the brain stem would activate the yawn reflex to help normalize CO2 and O2 within the blood. This hypothesis is now deemed incorrect after a study was done by Robert R. Provine. Every explanation as to not only why we yawn, but why it seems so irresistibly contagious has been inaccurate or debunked. In lieu of these old inaccurate explanations, the scientific community has been a twitter with the latest discovery of very special cells called mirror neurons within the last decade.
