Earth at Night

lasvegas.jpgIs it no wonder that the U.S. consumes 25% of the world’s energy with only 5% of the world’s population? Look at the satellite photo of Earth at night….amazing!

It’s Still a Man’s World

india.jpgAccording to a recent news release from the Associated Press, it’s still a man’s world. Matter of fact, in India it literally is a man’s world since men outnumber women. Why? Because in India people think so much more of men than women that women routinely abort female fetuses. With the widespread use of ultrasound technology, the gender of unborn children can be determined. And this is leading to the ‘disappearance’ of girls in India. There is new evidence that there are about 7,000 fewer girls born each day in India. From a BBC article, India has lost more than 10 million female births in the last 20 years.

Is God Bad for You?

angel.jpgWhen I was growing up my parents never told me how to believe or what to believe when it came to religion. One Sunday I would go to the Baptist church on the corner. The next Sunday I would go to the Methodist Church around the corner. They asked me each time how I felt about the experience and each time I had to admit I was not impressed. I even went to Vacation Bible School one Summer and made crafts that depicted Jesus Christ. I never got it.

To this day, I still don’t get it and I wonder what all the fuss is about. So, I’ve been doing some research and have arrived at the conclusion that religion’s affect on society leans more towards the negative than the positive. So let’s take a look at what people are saying about whether or not God is bad for you.

A Break From TXU Fast Tracking Coal Plants

smog.jpgIt was reported today in the Austin American Statesman that Governor Rick Perry’s appointment, Martin Hubert, to the three-member environmental commission of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, is leaving his post after having served only since September. He has been tapped for a key position in the state comptroller’s office. Interesting why he leaves now when Governor Perry is attempting to ‘fast-track’ 11 new coal-fired power plants for TXU.

Limitless Eating Without Getting FAT!

fat.jpgRecent research in a study that appeared in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences is showing a peculiar protein in rat’s brains that is responsible for the energy homeostasis regulator. Once this anti-obesity protein was isolated, it was tested on rats with daily injections right into the brain. The rats then were introduced to a high fat laden diet for two weeks. The rats that received the protein showed little weight gain when compared to the control plus a higher metabolism at rest and raised core body temperature.

Iraq: Democracy or American Imperialism?

saddampalace.jpgWhen asked what our mission is in Iraq, President Bush says it is “to support an Iraqi government who can defend, govern and sustain itself. And we aren’t going to leave until we complete the job.” So, just what is this government that Bush is talking about? If we are to look at the beginnings of this government and where Iraq is today, you would be shocked by what you learn.

Who Needs Terrorists, We Have Ourselves

warhead.jpgSo in the Austin American Statesman I am reading about one of the biggest “Opps!” the world could have ever seen. Here is the story:

“An accident that occurred last year as a decades-old nuclear warhead was being dismantled at the government’s Pantex facility near Amarillo could have caused the device to detonate, a nonprofit organization charged Thursday…

The Pantex facility, 17 miles northeast of Amarillo in the Panhandle, is the country’s only factory for assembling and disassembling nuclear weapons…
