The Secret Behind Carbohydrates — Part One

apple.jpgAtkins Diet, South Beach Diet, Glycemic Index Diet, Raw Diet, Hollywood Diet, Watermelon Diet…

Ever wonder why there are so many diets out there concerning carbohydrate consumption? With every diet claiming they are the one with the secret and each having different sets of standards, it is no wonder that America is losing the battle of the bulge.

What is the real truth behind carbohydrates? Here is the REAL science behind what makes our body do what it does.

FACT: Any diet that strays away from what our ancestors ate thousands of years ago is absolute B.S.! Their diet consisted of predominately vegetables and fruits with animal protein when available. There are some rare tribes like the Inuits who ate almost all meat (where the origin of Atkins diet came from), but before you start gorging on bacon, I will discuss the downside to all the diet misconceptions (Article Coming Soon).

Getting back to our ancestors. Our bodies were designed from hundreds of thousands of years of evolution to eat a certain way, and this way is the only true successful way. Think about it. For these many, many years our genetics and physiology has adapted to eating what was available, and the only things available were vegetables, fruits and animals. With limited abilities of controlling fire and temperature, most things were eaten raw with the exception of animal protein as it was easier to chew cooked. Any other way of eating is literally going against every fiber of our being. With millions of years of evolution in mind, of course our bodies are going hay-wire. We are going against everything our bodies are designed to do while we are waiting inline at McDonalds. Everything today is fried, processed, slathered, smothered, canned, frozen, and packaged for our convenience. Our food today is absolutely nothing like what our ancestors ate for all those years before the modern diet came along.

Here is the secret! As long as you eat it the way it grows out of the ground, or no one has touched it between mother nature and you, it is perfect. Get all your groceries at the butcher and the produce section. Leave the middle of the grocery store for the people who are not “in the know”. Keep it simple. The highest percentage of what you eat should be vegetables and fruits followed by lean animal protein. This will align yourself with your genetic evolution. No more fighting your natural instincts governed by your DNA.

Now, let’s get to the science of carbs shall we? Please see Part Two of this article!

I don’t agree with you about evolution.
    Something cannot come from nothing.
There is a creator and His name is
    Jesus Christ.
    Thanks

Totally agree. Waiting for part 2. :) By the way, I wonder if Jesus Christ would eat McD’s if he was around today. ;)

Thanks for your comment. Although this article is not a place to discuss Religion, I will address this comment.

Please read the article with care, and don’t jump to judgments. I was referring to the evolution of our digestive system, not the evolution of where humans came from. If you want a more in depth discussion on my stance on religion and the christian God, please see this article, and its comments.

Other than that, I will say that if you do not believe something can’t come from nothing, then where do you stand on where “your” God came from? And, what about where the first people came from. Even though you say She created them, their matter still had to poof right out of thin air. Ah, quite the ultimate contradiction. Oh, one more thing. What happened to giving God some credit? I though She was the creator of everything? Now it is Jesus Christ that is the creator? I thought he was just God’s son?

It still stands that scientific evolution sounds more rational than a god going around creating stuff out of thin air.

    Thanks for reading,

ADDED AT LATER TIME: My Wife, that went through 12 years of catholic private school by the way, just asked me a wonderful question. How did Jesus create everything after everything was already created? This is what you call causality, in time travel science that is.

  4. Lose Weight Without Hunger! Part One January 8th, 2007 1:57 am

[…] STARCH is NOT your enemy! It can be your greatest ally in relieving you of your constant hunger pangs while you successfully loss weight. […]

  5. […]     What most people don’t realize is how stress can create an environmental storm inside your body. Stress has a nasty tendency to stimulate our adrenal glands. When these glands are stimulated they release cortisol and male hormones called androgens. Both of these hormones are pro-inflammatory. This means that as soon as they are released into the body, it causes the body to react. On the cellular level, inflammation starts to ensue. If you want a great example, have you ever noticed how acne will flare up at the worst times — like picture day when you were in school, or your wedding day? Well, what do you think acne is? It is an inflammation of the skin’s pores. This might be something you never thought about but food can have a similar effect on stress. When you eat anything that is a carbohydrate, no matter if it is a starch, a soda or a piece of candy, it is going to be converted into blood sugar or glucose. It is the rate in which these carbohydrates are digested that makes them bad or good. Good are the ones that are digested slowly, and bad are the ones that are digested quickly. For a full description of this subject read this article. When you consume a carbohydrate that is quickly digested, you not only get a spike in glucose, but you also get a spike in insulin. Insulin is the body’s way of delivering glucose to the cells of our body. The more the glucose we have, the more insulin that follows. […]

  6. […] Hopefully you have read part one to this article, and you are ready to learn how to incorporate this newly found science. Let’s go over how and why you should use this information. In reviewing the main idea in part one, starch is not the enemy you may think it is. The science is in how it is prepared. When you compare our nation with others, you notice how we are the only country who bakes and frys our starches. Most others steam and boil their starch. This explains the mystery behind why Americans have an obesity epidemic. When you boil or steam starch, you retain the health benefit of its long chain carbohydrate structure. This long chain is what stabilizes your energy levels by slowing down the digestion/conversion of the starch into blood sugar or glucose. When we bake and fry starches we break the long chain into smaller pieces called dextrose molecules that are easily converted into blood sugar. This creates high spikes in insulin to combat the quick release of sugar. The detrimental effects are explained in this article. […]
